Clarabelle is a grafted cross of the flame tree and the lacebark, carrying dense clusters of pink-red star-shaped flowers in late spring and early summer. Unlike the flame tree it holds much of its foliage while it flowers, so the colour sits within a green canopy rather than on bare branches.
In the landscape
A rounded, well-proportioned shade tree that also happens to flower heavily, which makes it useful in streets, car parks and open lawn where a specimen has to earn its keep for more than three weeks a year. Allow 8–10 m between trees in an avenue. Roots are non-invasive. It also works as a screen when planted in a run, and pairs well with lower-growing natives that take dappled shade.
Growing notes
Semi-deciduous around flowering, thinning rather than stripping as the flowers open in late spring and early summer. Suited to Queensland, New South Wales and warmer parts of Victoria; hardy to moderate frost, tropical heat, coastal exposure and urban pollution. It takes most soils but needs genuine drainage and full sun. In the ground expect roughly 8–12 m tall by 6–8 m wide. Hardy and drought tolerant once established.
