Red Robin is a grafted cross between the flame tree and Brachychiton bidwillii, and it takes the best of both, deep red bells on red stems through spring and summer, carried on a small, rounded tree with unusually large and lush maple-shaped leaves.
In the landscape
The compact frame makes it one of the few flowering natives that sits comfortably in narrow verges. It carries an avenue at 5–6 m centres, holds a courtyard or entry as a single specimen, and being grafted it flowers young and true to type rather than waiting out the long juvenile period of seedling flame trees.
Growing notes
Semi-deciduous around flowering, thinning rather than stripping as the deep red bells open on red stems through spring and summer. Suited to Queensland, New South Wales and warmer Victorian districts; hardy to moderate frost once established. It wants full sun and free-draining soil, will not tolerate wet feet, and grows at a moderate rate to about 5–8 m tall by 4–5 m wide in the ground. Drought tolerant once established.
