The Firewheel Tree, Stenocarpus sinuatus, is one of the most distinctive flowering natives of the east-coast rainforest, deep glossy, lobed foliage on a naturally upright, columnar frame, lit in late summer by red-orange flowers arranged like the spokes of a wheel. It reads as sculpture long before it flowers.
In the landscape
A refined vertical accent for courtyards, entries and narrow planting bays where a spreading canopy will not fit. Proven as a street and avenue tree on non-invasive roots, and equally at home as a single specimen against masonry or deep rainforest planting. The summer flowers are held close to the foliage and draw nectar-feeding birds.
Growing notes
Suited to Queensland and coastal New South Wales, and reliable in warm, sheltered gardens into Victoria. Best in rich, well-drained loam though tolerant of most soils, with steady rather than rapid growth. Evergreen, reaching around 8–12 m tall by 4–5 m wide in cultivation, well below its rainforest height. Tolerates moderate frost once established, and is drought-hardy once settled, with good tolerance of coastal exposure and urban pollution.
