Deep yellow wood is a tough, rounded native of the dry rainforests of south-east Queensland and northern New South Wales, glossy pinnate foliage on an even evergreen crown, lit in spring by airy racemes of deep pink to red flowers. Rhodosphaera rhodanthema is one of the natives that keeps its composure in hard urban conditions.
In the landscape
Proven as a street, avenue and carpark tree, and equally good as a shade or lawn specimen; dense enough in crown for screening and windbreak lines. At this size it establishes an avenue or shade planting with immediate effect. Non-invasive roots and a naturally clear trunk of around 2 m suit paved and trafficked settings, and it is excellent in tough positions where showier natives struggle.
Growing notes
Evergreen and adaptable, tolerant of moderate frost and full tropical heat, suited throughout coastal and inland Queensland, New South Wales and warmer Victorian sites. Grows in full sun to light shade on most soils, provided drainage is sound. Steady, moderate growth to around 8–12 m tall by 6–8 m wide in the ground.
