Crow's ash, Flindersia australis, is one of the stateliest of the eastern rainforest natives, a dense, shady, rounded canopy, sprays of perfumed white flowers from spring into late summer, and the sculptural star-shaped seed capsules that follow. Its timber once floored Queensland's verandahs; the living tree lends a landscape the same sense of permanence.
In the landscape
An excellent avenue, street and shade tree with non-invasive roots, equally at home as a lawn specimen or in windbreaks and rural drives. The citrus-scented flowers draw birds. It sits naturally alongside other dry-rainforest species, Harpullia, Cupaniopsis and its fellow flindersias.
Growing notes
- Climate: indigenous to New South Wales and Queensland; reliable in subtropical and warm-temperate zones, tolerant of moderate frost once established and notably drought hardy
- Evergreen, relatively fast growing
- Soil: adaptable to a wide range of soils; tolerates coastal exposure and urban pollution
- Mature size in the ground: around 12 m tall with a rounded crown in cultivation, far larger in its rainforest habitat
