Maple silkwood, Flindersia pimenteliana, is a North Queensland rainforest tree of quiet refinement, lime-green new leaves against deep green mature foliage, a trunk with the sheen of raw silk, and large terminal clusters of pink to red flowers in spring carrying a light citrus perfume.
In the landscape
Use it as a flowering specimen, street or shade tree where something less familiar than the standard natives is wanted; it also serves in screens and windbreaks. The clean trunk and rounded crown give it a composed, architectural outline, and its roots are non-invasive.
Growing notes
- Climate: indigenous to North Queensland; proven in tropical and subtropical zones and tolerant of moderate frost once established
- Evergreen; resistant to drought once established
- Soil: most soils provided drainage is good
- Mature size in the ground: 8–12 m with a rounded crown
- Full sun to light shade; handles tropical heat
