Yellow ash, Flindersia xanthoxyla, is a stately eastern Australian native with whorls of pinnate, almost fern-like foliage and terminal panicles of creamy yellow flowers in late spring, carrying the light citrus perfume of its family. Its timber has long been prized for feature flooring and cabinetwork.
In the landscape
A large-scale avenue, street and parkland shade tree with non-invasive roots, suited to schools, campuses and large grounds where a substantial native canopy is wanted. It reads well massed along drives or standing alone in lawn.
Growing notes
- Climate: endemic to eastern Australia; reliable across subtropical and warm-temperate Queensland and New South Wales, tolerant of moderate frost once established
- Evergreen, relatively fast growing
- Soil: exceptionally adaptable, from black cracking clays to shaley, rocky ground
- Mature size in the ground: 10–15 m with a rounded crown
- Tolerates coastal exposure, pollution and tropical heat
