Leopard ash, Flindersia collina, earns its name from a beautifully mottled trunk that patterns with age. Above it sits a dense, rounded canopy of glossy foliage, lit through the warmer months, chiefly in spring, by clusters of citrus-scented white flowers, followed by woody starfish seed pods.
In the landscape
A refined street and avenue tree with non-invasive roots, and a handsome specimen wherever the mottled bark can be read at close quarters, courtyards, entry drives and lawns. Also useful in screens and windbreaks. Its moderate scale suits residential work better than its larger relatives.
Growing notes
- Climate: from the New South Wales border ranges into inland southern Queensland; tolerant of moderate frost and notably drought hardy, among the toughest of the flindersias
- Evergreen, relatively fast growing
- Soil: most soils, including drier and rockier profiles; tolerates coastal exposure and pollution
