Waterhousea floribunda, the weeping lilly pilly, drapes a dense, rounded canopy in soft pendulous foliage that moves with the slightest air, the reason it remains the benchmark native for screening at scale. Large clusters of white flowers arrive in summer, followed by pale green berries with a pink tinge.
In the landscape
The first tree specified when an evergreen screen or hedge must be dense, fast and graceful, boundaries, pool enclosures, tennis courts and long private drives. Grown here in volume for projects that need matched screening runs; plant at 2–3 m centres for a continuous screen, closer for an instant hedge.
Growing notes
Reliable through Queensland and New South Wales and into warm-temperate Victoria. Fast-growing in most soils, from heavy clay to loam, with best results on reliable moisture. Evergreen and frost-resistant once established, tolerant of tropical heat and urban pollution, with non-invasive roots. Left untrimmed it reaches 8–15 m tall by 4–8 m wide; it is easily held at hedge scale.
