Waterhousea floribunda, the weeping lilly pilly, is the benchmark native for evergreen screening, and these trees are grown on specifically for continuous screen and feature wall planting, with dense pendulous foliage carried low and even. Large clusters of white flowers arrive in summer, followed by pale green berries with a pink tinge.
In the landscape
Planted in a matched run at 1.5–2 m centres, these trees knit into a continuous green wall from day one, boundary screening, pool enclosures, courtyard backdrops and architectural hedging at height. The foliage takes clipping cleanly, so the wall can be held to a crisp face or left to move softly.
Growing notes
Reliable through Queensland and New South Wales and into warm-temperate Victoria. Fast-growing in most soils, from heavy clay to loam, with best results on reliable moisture. Evergreen and frost-resistant once established, tolerant of tropical heat and urban pollution, with non-invasive roots. Left untrimmed it reaches 8–15 m tall by 4–8 m wide; it is easily held at hedge scale.
