Tristaniopsis laurina ‘DOW10’ Luscious is the refined form of the native water gum, leaves nearly twice the size of the species, deep green and glossy, with copper-tinged new growth and bark that peels port-red to reveal a mottled cream trunk. Fragrant golden-yellow flowers follow in summer.
In the landscape
The usual choice where a native is wanted with the presence of a magnolia, avenues and driveways, clipped screens and hedges, pool surrounds and courtyards. Its dense evergreen canopy and non-invasive roots suit paved and serviced streetscapes; plant at 3–4 m centres for screening, wider for avenue work.
Growing notes
Proven through Queensland, New South Wales and Victoria; frost-resistant and drought-hardy once established, and tolerant of tropical heat and urban pollution. Grows in a wide range of soils in full sun or light shade. Evergreen, with moderate growth to around 7–12 m in the ground, though it is readily held smaller under a clipping regime.
