Tabebuia argentea, the silver trumpet tree, is grown as much for its silhouette as its flowers, crooked, sculptural limbs clad in corky, silvery bark beneath silver-grey foliage. In late winter and early spring the canopy turns to massed golden trumpet flowers, often on near-bare branches, in one of the great flowering displays of the tropics.
In the landscape
Best placed where the whole tree can be seen, a lawn or courtyard specimen, poolside, or as a flowering street and avenue tree in warm districts. The pale bark and silver foliage read well against dark tropical greens and masonry alike.
Growing notes
A tree for the tropics and warm subtropics, coastal and near-coastal Queensland into frost-free northern New South Wales. It asks for full sun and free-draining soil, is notably drought-hardy once established, and is briefly deciduous around flowering. Expect a slow-growing, characterful tree of around 6–8 m tall by 4–6 m wide; young trees are frost-sensitive.
