The jacaranda needs little introduction, soft, ferny foliage through summer, then that unmistakable haze of lilac-blue trumpet flowers in late spring, falling to lay a second bloom across the ground beneath. Jacaranda mimosifolia remains the most loved flowering shade tree in the warm parts of Australia.
In the landscape
Definitive as an avenue planting at 8–10 m centres, as a single lawn specimen or casting light shade over a terrace. Flowering is heaviest in full sun. The classic pairing is with Brachychiton acerifolius, whose scarlet flowering overlaps its own.
Growing notes
- Climate: reliable across Queensland, New South Wales and the warmer parts of Victoria; established trees take light frost, young trees need protection from it
- Deciduous, briefly bare in late winter to early spring ahead of flowering
- Soil: well-drained soils essential; drought tolerant once established
- Growth: moderately fast
- Mature size in the ground: typically 10–15 m tall with a broad spreading crown of 8–12 m
