The queen crepe myrtle, Lagerstroemia speciosa, is the grandest of the genus, a true tropical tree carrying large upright trusses of mauve to lavender flowers through summer over big, leathery leaves that turn copper-red before dropping in the dry season.
In the landscape
A signature street and shade tree across the tropics and a striking lawn or poolside specimen in frost-free gardens. Use it where jacaranda scale is wanted with a summer, rather than spring, performance. The smooth mottled trunk is an asset at close range.
Growing notes
- Climate: tropical to warm subtropical, coastal Queensland is its country; frost tender, and not suited to cold-winter districts of New South Wales or Victoria
- Deciduous, colouring before leaf fall
- Soil: deep, moist, well-drained soils; responds to steady summer moisture
- Growth: moderately fast in warmth
- Mature size in the ground: typically 8–12 m in cultivation with a rounded crown
