Syzygium luehmannii, the small-leaved lilly pilly or riberry, carries fine glossy foliage on a dense, rounded crown, with new growth flushing pink to red through the warm months. Fluffy white summer flowers are followed by small red riberry fruit, prized by birds and cooks alike.
In the landscape
One of the most versatile natives for formal work, it clips cleanly into hedges, screens and topiary at almost any scale, and is equally proven as a street tree or freestanding specimen on non-invasive roots. Planted at 1.5–2.5 m centres it closes into a dense evergreen screen.
Growing notes
Reliable across Queensland and coastal New South Wales, and in warm, sheltered gardens further south. Prefers a well-drained, slightly acidic loam, with steady growth to around 4–8 m tall by 3–5 m wide in cultivation, far below its rainforest stature. Evergreen, tolerant of moderate frost once established, and untroubled by tropical heat or urban pollution.
