The scented daphne is a rainforest tree of tropical Queensland that flowers straight from its branches, clusters of waxy white blooms set against large glossy leaves, with a perfume strong enough to name the tree. Phaleria clerodendron follows its flowering with bright scarlet fruit, and stays neat and densely foliaged year-round.
In the landscape
A small feature tree for courtyards, shaded gardens and rainforest-style plantings, positioned where its perfume gathers in still air, enclosed entries, under-canopy walks and sheltered terraces. One of the few flowering trees that performs in genuine shade, which makes it valuable beneath established canopy.
Growing notes
For the tropics and frost-free subtropics of coastal Queensland; shelter it from frost and drying wind. Grows in shade to filtered sun on moist, well-drained soil rich in organic matter, with steady moisture through the dry season. Evergreen and unhurried, maturing around 5–7 m tall by 3–4 m wide in the ground.
