The tropical golden chain tree, Lophanthera lactescens, earns its name honestly: through the warm months it hangs metre-long chains of golden flowers from a neat, upright evergreen crown. A Brazilian rainforest species that has proven itself in tropical Queensland, it delivers the golden-rain effect the temperate laburnums promise, in a tree actually built for this climate.
In the landscape
A show tree for the warm north: striking as a single specimen against dark foliage, in courtyard and resort planting, or repeated along a drive where the hanging gold chains read in rhythm. Its tidy, upright habit suits streets and formal settings that cannot accommodate a spreading canopy.
Growing notes
Tropical and warm frost-free subtropical climates; flowers best in full sun on deep, well-drained soil with reliable moisture. Moderately fast to around 8–12 m in cultivation with a narrow to oval evergreen crown. Frost-tender, particularly when young; shelter from cold dry winds in marginal areas.
