The silk handkerchief tree, Maniltoa lenticellata, is one of the rainforest's quiet spectacles. Its new growth emerges in soft, pendulous flushes, pale pink to ivory tassels that hang like silk handkerchiefs among the deep green canopy before firming to leaf. An evergreen rainforest native of tropical Queensland and New Guinea, it carries an air of occasion few shade trees can match.
In the landscape
A refined feature tree for courtyards, resorts and streetscapes in the warm north, most striking where the hanging new growth can be seen at close quarters: entries, terraces and pool surrounds. Its dense, rounded evergreen canopy also reads beautifully in avenue rhythm. Pairs naturally with rainforest underplanting and deep-green formal hedging.
Growing notes
Suited to the tropics and warm frost-free subtropics; thrives in the wet tropics where it grows naturally. Prefers deep, moist, well-drained soil with mulch over the root zone, in sun to part shade. Moderate growth to roughly 8–15 m in cultivation with a dense weeping-tipped crown. Evergreen; sensitive to frost and hard drying winds when young.
