The champak is grown for its perfume before anything else, golden-orange flowers held among glossy evergreen foliage, releasing a fragrance that carries across a garden through the warm months. Revered across South and Southeast Asia and long planted around temples, Magnolia champaca brings an upright evergreen presence and one of the most recognisable scents in horticulture.
In the landscape
Plant it where the fragrance will be met, beside entries, courtyards, pool terraces and outdoor rooms, or as an upright evergreen specimen within a tropical planting scheme. Its conical habit suits repetition along a drive, and it sits naturally alongside frangipani, gardenia and broad-leafed rainforest species.
Growing notes
A tree for the tropics and warm, frost-free subtropics, coastal Queensland and sheltered northern New South Wales; it is not suited to frost-prone or cold southern sites. Give it deep, rich, well-drained soil with reliable moisture; growth is quick in warmth. Evergreen, reaching roughly 10–15 m tall by 5–8 m wide in the ground in Australian gardens. Fragrance and flowering are strongest in full sun.
