The Port Jackson fig, Ficus rubiginosa, is a rugged native shade tree with a dense, rounded crown of deep green leaves backed in rusty felt. It has the unhurried, permanent character of the great figs while staying more compact than the Moreton Bay giants.
In the landscape
Proven as a specimen and shade tree for parks, campuses and coastal foreshores, and in broad streets and rural windbreaks. Its fruit feeds a wide range of native birds. Plant it clear of paving and services, a minimum 6–8 m offset from structures is prudent for any fig of this class.
Growing notes
- Climate: native from the New South Wales coast into Queensland; suits tropical, subtropical and warm-temperate zones, and is among the most frost-tolerant of the larger native figs once established
- Evergreen, moderate growth rate
- Soil: sandy, loamy and acidic soils; tolerates poor and rocky ground
- Mature size in the ground: 8–15 m tall with a broad rounded crown
- Highly resistant to coastal exposure and pollution
