The pink euodia is one of the great wildlife trees of the northern rainforests, dense clusters of soft pink flowers held directly along its branches through summer, drawing honeyeaters, lorikeets and butterflies in numbers. Melicope elleryana is the principal host plant of the Ulysses butterfly, and few natives earn their place in a garden as visibly.
In the landscape
A fast canopy tree for shade and habitat plantings, as a lawn specimen, within rainforest-style gardens, or along drives and boundaries where quick cover is wanted. Its pale corky bark and layered branching read well against deeper rainforest greens; underplant with shade-tolerant natives as the canopy lifts.
Growing notes
A tree for tropical and warm subtropical gardens, coastal Queensland from the far north to the south-east and into northern New South Wales; frost-tender when young and not suited to cold southern sites. Evergreen and fast-growing, reaching roughly 10–15 m tall by 6–8 m wide in the ground in cultivation. Happiest in moist, well-drained soil with summer water, flowering in sun from a young age.
