The silky oak, Grevillea robusta, is the largest of the grevilleas and one of eastern Australia's great flowering trees, deeply divided, ferny foliage silvered beneath, and boughs crowded with golden comb flowers in late spring, heavy with nectar and birds.
In the landscape
A fast avenue, parkland and paddock tree that delivers height quickly on new subdivisions, its spring flowering reading from hundreds of metres. Give it room to develop its tall, open-domed form, and site it away from pools and fine gravel surfaces, it sheds some leaf ahead of flowering.
Growing notes
- Climate: from subtropical Queensland through New South Wales into much of Victoria; tolerant of light to moderate frost once established, and drought hardy
- Semi-evergreen, the canopy thins noticeably just before flowering
- Soil: well-drained soils essential; dislikes waterlogging but handles poorer ground well
- Growth: fast, especially in its first decade
- Mature size in the ground: commonly 15–25 m tall by 8–12 m wide in the open
