'Exmouth' is one of the oldest and most trusted selections of Magnolia grandiflora, a stately, rounded evergreen with glossy green leaves washed bronze beneath, bearing large creamy white flowers through summer with a heavy lemon fragrance.
In the landscape
A formal evergreen for lawns, entries and avenues, and equally proven as a street tree, windbreak or tall pleached screen; allow 4–6 m centres for a continuous avenue canopy. Non-invasive roots make it a safe choice near paving, pools and structures, and it takes well to containers at courtyard scale.
Growing notes
Hardy through Queensland, New South Wales and Victoria, and notably reliable in coastal south-east Queensland; tolerant of frost, pollution, coastal exposure and tropical heat. Best in deep, loamy, slightly acidic soil with steady moisture and good drainage, in full sun to light shade. Evergreen, maturing around 10–12 m tall by 5–6 m wide in the ground.
